More Than an Extreme Drop Test

A smartphone has survived an extraordinary journey from the stratosphere to the ground, earning a Guinness World Records title in the process. On June 24, 2026, RHINOSHIELD and aerospace company Sent Into Space carried an iPhone 17 Pro fitted with an AirX protective case to an altitude of 30,607 metres above Kiruna, Sweden. That is more than three times the typical cruising altitude of a commercial passenger aircraft.

The device was lifted by a high-altitude balloon before being released for its descent. The experiment was designed to test far more than ordinary drop resistance. At such an altitude, equipment must operate in extremely cold conditions and under atmospheric pressure dramatically lower than at sea level.

Extreme Conditions Before the Impact

According to the companies involved, the phone encountered temperatures of approximately –40°C to –60°C and atmospheric pressure of around one percent of the standard pressure at sea level. The descent lasted roughly 25 minutes before the device reached the remote Swedish landscape.

The protective case was the main focus of the experiment. AirX uses a cushioning structure designed to absorb and distribute impact energy rather than allowing the force of the collision to concentrate on the smartphone. Its design was inspired in part by airbags and other shock-absorbing technologies.

Before the stratospheric test, the developers subjected the case to numerous laboratory trials, including drop, torsion, airtightness, temperature and humidity testing. The extreme flight was intended to take those tests far beyond conventional conditions.

The Phone Was Still Working

After landing, the team had to locate the device in the Swedish wilderness. Once recovered, the smartphone remained functional: it could be switched on and off, make calls and take photographs. The exterior was also reported to be intact. Guinness World Records subsequently confirmed the achievement for the highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case onto natural landforms.

The recorded height was 30,607 metres, or more than 100,000 feet. The achievement demonstrates how far modern protective materials can be pushed when engineers combine impact absorption, structural design and environmental testing.

More Than an Extreme Drop Test

The experiment also had another purpose. RHINOSHIELD designed AirX around a mono-material concept, aiming to combine strong protection with a case that can be recycled as a single material. The company used the record attempt to challenge the assumption that environmentally conscious product design necessarily means sacrificing durability.

Of course, a stratospheric fall is not a realistic everyday smartphone accident. The result cannot predict exactly what will happen during every fall onto concrete, asphalt or another surface. Nevertheless, the experiment provides a striking demonstration of how protective technology can be engineered to withstand conditions far beyond those encountered in normal use.
