The Metropolitan Museum of Art has canceled its planned spring 2027 exhibition dedicated to British fashion designer John Galliano. The retrospective, titled John Galliano: Horizons, was expected to explore more than four decades of his career and was closely connected with the 2027 Met Gala. The decision has become one of the most significant controversies surrounding the Costume Institute in recent years.
The exhibition had attracted attention even before its cancellation because Galliano remains an influential figure in modern fashion while his career is also associated with a serious public scandal. In 2011, he was dismissed from Dior after making racist and antisemitic comments, an episode that had a lasting impact on his professional reputation. The planned retrospective was therefore expected to address both his creative achievements and the difficult aspects of his past.
Why the Exhibition Became Controversial
Criticism intensified after the Met announced the project. Jewish community representatives, politicians and some museum supporters questioned whether the retrospective was appropriate, particularly given the broader rise in antisemitism.
